Common Envelope Evolution through Planetary Nebula Eyes

چکیده

The common envelope interaction is responsible for evolved close binaries. Among them are a minority of central stars of planetary nebula (PN). Recent observational results, however, point to most PN actually being in binary systems. We therefore ask the question if it is feasible that most, or even all Galactic PN derive from a common envelope interaction. Our recent calculation finds that if all single and binary primary stars with mass between ∼1-8 M⊙ eject a PN, there would be many more PN in the galaxy than observed. On the other hand, the predicted number of post-common envelope PN is more in agreement with the total number of PN in the Galaxy. This is a new indication that binary interactions play a functional role in the creation of PN and an encouragement to intensify efforts to detect binary companions.

Comments on the Final Orbital Separation in Common Envelope Evolution

I study some aspects of common envelope evolution, where a compact star enters the envelope of a giant star. I show that in some binary systems under a narrow range of parameters, a substantial fraction of the giant stellar envelope is lost before the onset of the common envelope. The reduced envelope mass at the onset of the common envelope implies that the binary system emerges from the commo...

Common envelope evolution

Many binary star systems are not wide enough to contain the progenitor stars from which they were made. One explanation for this is that when one star becomes a red giant a common envelope forms around both stars in the binary system. The core of the giant and its companion star continue to orbit one another inside the envelope. Frictional energy deposited into the common envelope may lead to i...

High resolution millimeter imaging of the proto-planetary nebula

We report high resolution (1′′–2′′) imaging of the CO 2–1 line and the millimeter continuum in the proto-planetary nebula He 3-1475. The observations reveal the presence of a massive (∼ 0.6 M⊙) envelope of molecular gas around the origin of the remarkable bipolar jet system seen in optical images with the HST. The CO kinematics are well modeled by an expanding, bi-conical envelope: the prominen...

The origin, evolution and role of magnetic fields in the production and shaping of proto-planetary and planetary nebulae (PPNe, PNe) is a subject of active research. Most PNe and PPNe are axisymmetric with many exhibiting highly collimated outflows, however, it is important to understand whether such structures can be generated by isolated stars or require the presence of a binary companion. To...

H2 Morphology of Young Planetary Nebulae

The distributions of H2 1-0 S(l) emission in the young planetary nebulae BD +30°3639 and NGC 7027 show ~triking similarities: both have limb-brightened arcs of H2 emission with radii that are about twice those of ~h~ir H; II regions. The extended H2 emission in both nebulae is attributed to a photodissociation region. Thi.s implies that the neutral envelopes of these young planetaries extend we...
